The Coil

Post-partum coil insertion, also known as immediate post-partum intrauterine device (IUD) placement, is a contraceptive method where a small device is inserted into the uterus shortly after childbirth.

Post-partum coil insertion provides immediate and highly effective contraception, helping to prevent unintended pregnancies soon after childbirth. This is particularly crucial for individuals who want to space their pregnancies or delay further pregnancies for various reasons, such as financial stability, career goals, or personal well-being.

Post-partum coils are long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) that offer protection against pregnancy for several years, depending on the type of device used. They do not require daily attention or administration, providing a reliable and hassle-free contraceptive solution for individuals adjusting to the demands of new parenthood.

Most types of post-partum coils are safe to use while breastfeeding, making them suitable for individuals who are nursing their newborns. This allows breastfeeding parents to effectively prevent unintended pregnancies without compromising their ability to breastfeed their infants.

Unlike some hormonal contraceptives, post-partum coils do not interfere significantly with lactation or milk supply. This ensures that individuals can continue breastfeeding without concerns about potential adverse effects on their milk production or the health of their nursing infants.

Overall, post-partum coil insertion offers a reliable, convenient, and immediately effective contraceptive option for individuals seeking to prevent unintended pregnancies after childbirth. By providing timely access to contraception, it supports reproductive autonomy and empowers individuals to make informed choices about their family planning goals and reproductive health.

The hormonal implant

A contraceptive implant is a small, flexible rod approximately the size of a matchstick that is inserted under the skin of a woman’s upper arm. It releases hormones (typically progestin) into the bloodstream to prevent pregnancy. The implant is highly effective and can last for up to three years.

Highly Effective – Contraceptive implants have a success rate of over 99%, making them one of the most effective birth control methods available.

Long Lasting – Once inserted, the implant provides protection against pregnancy for up to three years without any additional intervention needed.

Convenient – The implant is a set-and-forget method, meaning you do not need to remember to take a daily pill or schedule regular visits for other forms of contraception.

Menstrual Regulation – Many users experience lighter periods or even the absence of menstruation over time, which can be a relief for those with heavy menstrual cycles.

Fertility Returns Quickly – Once the implant is removed, fertility generally returns to normal almost immediately, allowing for quick conception if desired.
